OFFICIAL VISIT TO EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT BY THE CONSERVATIVE FRIENDS OF CYPRUS

The Conservative Friends of Cyprus were invited by Dr Charles Tannock MEP to visit the European Parliament on Wednesday where they received a briefing by officials on the work of the parliament. A meeting with Dr Tannock ensued.

Dr Tannock, is a Conservative MEP and thus is part of the third largest group of the European parliament – the European Conservatives and Reformists. In his 18 years as a Member of the European Parliament, he has been an ardent supporter of Cyprus and its quest for reunification. He is active on the matter in both Brussels and London, conducting frequent meetings with British, European and Cypriot officials and submitting questions and points for consideration. Dr Tannock – who is a member of the Conservative Friends of Cyprus group – is elected in the London constituency where a substantial number of Cypriots reside.

During the meeting the case of Brexit was discussed, with Dr Tannock expressing the need for the continuation of a warm relationship between the United Kingdom and Cyprus, through a common understanding and joint endeavours. He also expressed the hope that the withdrawal of the United Kingdom does not have a negative impact on the bargaining power of Cyprus within the EU, considering that London and Nicosia often cooperated and voted jointly on matters of common interest in the European decision-making process.

Dr Tannock pledged to maintain his intense efforts in support of the Cypriot cause and a just and sustainable solution, which will respect the rights of Cypriots and prohibit unilateral foreign intervention, thus preventing a recurrence of the grim events of 1974. He specifically expressed his intention to draft a letter to the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, requesting the continuation of the rigid positioning of the Union in respect to the recognition of the territorial rights of the Republic of Cyprus, in accordance to International Law principles.

Τhe delegation was headed by the founding member and Vice-President of the Conservative Friends of Cyprus, Andreas Papaevripides, who also serves as the President of the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots. Two additional founding members, Doros Partasides and Demetris Markou FCA MBE also participated and were joined by the Secretary of the group and local council candidate Maria Alexandrou, the President of Enfield Southgate Conservative Association, Andre Chris, Ioannis and Victoria Kouvaros, Stephanos Ioannou, Stella Dinenis and the executive team member George Hadjipavlis.

The visit is part of the Conservative Friends of Cyprus activities for the fostering of further close ties between British Cypriot community and the decision-making authorities of the United Kingdom, which have been ongoing since the formation of the group 25 years ago.
