Με την έκθεση «Ολυμπία – μύθος, λατρεία, αγώνες» το Martin-Gropius-Bau φέρνει στο Βερολίνο το πολιτιστικό γεγονός της χρονιάς.

Με μεγάλες προσδοκίες περίμενε ο κόσμος τους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες του Λονδίνου. Οι αρχαίες αναπαραστάσεις του γυμνού ανθρώπινου σώματος αποτέλεσαν την βάση για την εξέλιξη του σημερινού προτύπου ομορφιάς. Η έκθεση «Ολυμπία – μύθος, λατρεία, αγώνες» ανατρέχοντας στις απαρχές προσφέρει την δυνατότητα να κατανοηθεί το φαινόμενο των Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων σε όλη την πολιτιστικοϊστορική του διάσταση. Η έκθεση τοποθετεί την ιδέα των Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων στα αρχαιολογικά και ιστορικά της συμφραζόμενα. Πάνω από 500 αρχαία εκθέματα, τα οποία δανείζουν ελληνικά μουσεία,  παρουσιάζονται για πρώτη φορά στο εξωτερικό, μαζί με αντικείμενα που προέρχονται από την Συλλογή Αρχαιοτήτων των Κρατικών Μουσείων Βερολίνου, από το Λούβρο και από τα Μουσεία του Βατικανού.

Η έκθεση «Ολυμπία – μύθος, λατρεία, αγώνες» αποτελεί πρωτοβουλία του Ελληνικού Ιδρύματος Πολιτισμού Βερολίνου, της επίσημης αντιπροσωπείας του ελληνικού Υπουργείου Παιδείας και  Θρησκευμάτων, Πολιτισμού και Αθλητισμού. Der Martin-Gropius-Bau holt mit der Ausstellung “Mythos Olympia – Kult und Spiele” das Kulturereignis des Jahres nach Berlin.

Mit größter Erwartung blickte die Welt auf die Olympischen Spiele in London. Die antiken Darstellungen des nackten menschlichen Körpers sind grundlegend für die Entwicklung des heutigen Schönheitsideals.

Wer die Olympischen Spiele mit all ihren kulturgeschichtlichen Bezugsgrößen begreifen und ihren Ursprung verstehen will, dem gibt die Ausstellung “Mythos Olympia – Kult und Spiele” ab dem 31. August vertiefende Einblicke. “Mythos Olympia” stellt die Idee der Olympischen Spiele in einen archäologischen und kulturhistorischen Kontext. Über 500 antike Leihgaben aus Griechenland werden erstmals im Ausland präsentiert. Ergänzt werden sie um bedeutende Exponate aus der Antikensammlung der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin, dem Louvre und den Vatikanischen Museen.

Die Ausstellung “Mythos Olympia – Kult und Spiele” ist eine Initiative der Griechischen Kulturstiftung Berlin, der offiziellen Vertretung des Griechischen Kulturministeriums. As the world waited with mounting excitement the commencement of the Olympic Games in London, anyone wishing to understand the origin of the Olympic Games in all their cultural and historical aspects will find that “Olympia: Myth – Cult – Games”, the exhibition due to open on 31 August, offers profound insights.
“Olympia: Myth – Cult – Games” places the idea of the Olympic Games in an archaeological and historical context, sheds light on their origins, and presents the current state of research of the excavations at Olympia, in which the German Archaeological Institute has been involved since 1875. Over 500 loans from Ancient Greece will be exhibited abroad for the first time. They will be supplemented by important exhibits from the antiquities collections of the Berlin State Museums , the Louvre and the Vatican Museums.
