On Sunday 15 March 2026, the Sunday of the Veneration of the Holy Cross, His Eminence Archbishop Nikitas made his first pastoral visit to the Community of the Mother of God (Megalochari) in Norwich. His Eminence presided at Matins and celebrated the Divine Liturgy. The Revd Presbyter Dr Kenneth Parker, who serves the community twice monthly, concelebrated together with the Revd Archdeacon George Tsourous.
In his homily, His Eminence reflected on the meaning of the Cross at the heart of the Christian life, particularly during Great Lent. He spoke of the Cross not simply as a symbol of suffering, but as the source of life and victory, through which Christ transforms pain into hope and death into resurrection. Placed at the centre of the Lenten journey, the Cross, he noted, offers both strength and consolation, calling the faithful to perseverance, humility, and trust in God.
At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, the appointed rite of the Veneration of the Holy Cross took place, with the faithful coming forward to venerate the Cross in a spirit of reverence and devotion.
Following the service, His Eminence also read the prayer marking the fortieth day for a newly born baby girl, offering prayers for her health, growth, and protection.
A joyful community meal followed, during which His Eminence had the opportunity to spend time with the parishioners and to share in the life of the community.
The visit reflected the evident renewal taking place within the parish, with a growing number of young people becoming involved and, in many cases, embracing the Orthodox faith.
