Τη στήριξή της σε έναν από τους πιο παλιούς φίλους της Κύπρου στο βρετανικό κοινοβούλιο εξέφρασε την περασμένη Κυριακή η κυπριακή ομογένεια του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου, ενόψει των βουλευτικών εκλογών του Μαΐου στη χώρα.
Η κυπριακή παροικία του Margate στη νοτιοανατολική Αγγλία διοργάνωσε δείπνο υποστήριξης στον σερ Ρότζερ Γκέιλ, που εκπροσωπεί την τοπική περιφέρεια του North Thanet από τη σύστασή της το 1983.
Στο γεύμα σε ελληνικό εστιατόριο της πόλης Broadstairs παρέστησαν περίπου 50 μέλη της ελληνορθόδοξης κοινότητας του Αρχάγγελου Μιχαήλ, καθώς επίσης ο Πρόεδρος της ΠΟΜΑΚ Ανδρέας Παπαευριπίδης, ο Γραμματέας της Ελληνικής Κυπριακής Αδελφότητας Ανδρέας Καραολής, ο Πρόεδρος της οργάνωσης Συντηρητικοί Φίλοι της Κύπρου και δημοτικός σύμβουλος στο Enfield του βορείου Λονδίνου Τζέισον Χαραλάμπους, καθώς και ο καλός φίλος του σερ Ρότζερ Δώρος Παρτασίδης, γνωστός κινηματογραφιστής και φωτογράφος.
Ο Πρόεδρος της τοπικής κοινότητας Μιχάλης Παπαδόπουλος είπε ότι είναι καθήκον της κοινότητας να τιμήσει με την ψήφο της τον αληθινό φίλο σερ Ρότζερ, ο οποίος «επί τόσα πολλά χρόνια έχει σταθεί στο πλευρό του λαού της Κύπρου αναζητώντας δίκαιη λύση στο κυπριακό πρόβλημα».
Ο κ. Παπαευριπίδης εξήρε τον χαρακτήρα και την αφοσίωση του Συντηρητικού βουλευτή, λέγοντας χαρακτηριστικά ότι «το πρώτο όνομα Άγγλου πολιτικού που θα μνημονεύει κανείς στην κυπριακή κοινότητα ή στην Κύπρο ως φίλο της Κύπρου είναι αυτό του σερ Ρότζερ Γκέιλ». Και αυτό διότι «επί 30 χρόνια ο σερ Ρότζερ είναι αναμεμειγμένος σε όλες τις θετικές πρωτοβουλίες της βρετανικής πολιτικής υπέρ της Κύπρου». Ο Πρόεδρος της ΠΟΜΑΚ κάλεσε την κοινότητα να βοηθήσει με κάθε δυνατό τρόπο τον βουλευτή στις επερχόμενες εκλογές.
Ο ίδιος ο βουλευτής εξέφρασε την ευγνωμοσύνη του για τα καλά λόγια των ομιλητών, επισημαίνοντας ότι 32 χρόνια μετά την πρώτη εκλογή του στη Βουλή των Κοινοτήτων έχει πλέον πολλούς ακριβούς φίλους μεταξύ της κυπριακής κοινότητας.
Πρόσθεσε ότι έχει εργαστεί με συνέπεια για μια δίκαιη λύση στο Κυπριακό, η ενασχόλησή του με το οποίο ξεκίνησε όταν μετά την πρώτη εκλογή του ένας Κύπριος πρόσφυγας του έδειξε μια φωτογραφία του κατεχόμενου σπιτιού του. «Κανείς από μας δεν περίμενε ότι 40 χρόνια μετά δε θα είχε βρεθεί λύση και πλέον δεν υπάρχουν άλλες δικαιολογίες για να μην υπάρχει μία κοινή πατρίδα. Είναι ώρα για μια λύση. Μια δίκαιη λύση για όλους τους κατοίκους του νησιού και για ένα μέλλον χωρίς κατοχικά στρατεύματα», συμπλήρωσε ο σερ Ρότζερ.
Μιλώντας μετά την εκδήλωση ο κ. Χαραλάμπους τόνισε ότι «φίλοι σαν τον σερ Ρότζερ Γκέιλ είναι πολύτιμοι σύμμαχοι για την κυπριακή κοινότητα στη Βρετανία και για τις βρετανο-κυπριακές διμερείς σχέσ
εις». Πρόσθεσε ότι πρέπει να καταβληθεί κάθε προσπάθεια για την επανεκλογή του την 7η Μαΐου.

Cypriot Community Backs Sir Roger Gale MP
The Cypriot community of Margate pledged their support to the long serving Conservative MP for North Thanet, Sir Roger Gale, at a dinner held in Broadstairs on Sunday 22 March.
The dinner at a local Greek restaurant saw around 50 members of the Greek Orthodox Community of the Archangel Michael in Margate joined by POMAK President Andreas Papaevripides, Secretary of the Greek Cypriot Brotherhood Andreas Karaolis, Conservative Friends of Cyprus Chairman and Enfield Councillor Jason Charalambous, and Sir Roger Gale’s good friend Doros Partasides.
The Priest of the Archangel Michael, Archimandrite Vyssarion, blessed the dinner and the Chairman of the Community Michael Papadopoulos welcomed those attending. In his address Mr Papadopoulos said that it is the Community’s “duty to honour with our vote our true friend Sir Roger Gale who has stood for so many years at the side of the people of Cyprus in seeking a fair solution to the Cyprus problem”. Andreas Papaevripides then praised the character and dedication of Sir Roger Gale adding that “the first name of an English politician that anyone will mention in the Cypriot community or in Cyprus as a friend of Cyprus is Sir Roger Gale. That’s because for 30 years Sir Roger is involved in all positive initiatives in in British politics towards Cyprus. Whether this is a protest in London, a question in the House of Commons, or anything else on the Cyprus problem. Now it is our turn to show to our friends, the friends of Cyprus, that we too are their friends,” he said. Papaevripides then called on the community “to help Sir Roger Gales re-election in every way possible”.
In expressing his gratitude for the kind praise given by the speakers Sir Roger Gale said that “32 years have passed since I was elected for the first time as an MP and I have made many dear friends in the Cypriot community in that time”. He also explained how he has fought consistently for a just solution to the Cyprus problem after first being alerted to it when shortly after he was first elected a Cypriot refugee presented him with a photo of his occupied house. He stressed that “None of us could have ever expected after 40 years a solution would not yet be found, and there are no more excuses for not having a shared homeland. It’s time for a solution” he said. “A just solution for all inhabitants of the island and for a future without occupation troops”. Finally he thanked the community for its long standing and dedicated support and called on voters for their support at the general election and to give him the strength to promote a just solution of the Cyprus problem and the many important problems of society we live in today.
Michael Papadopoulos then offered Sir Roger Gale a gift of an image of the Virgin Mary.
Speaking after the event Cllr Jason Charalambous said “friends like Sir Roger Gale are invaluable allies to the Cypriot community in Britain and to British-Cyprus bilateral relations, and every effort should be made to support their re-election on May 7th. Furthermore Sir Roger’s principled and dedicated contribution to public life makes him a real asset to the House of Commons, and I encourage all those who are able to, to support his re-election, particularly with UKIP being a real and troubling threat in this part of the Country.” The Conservative Friends of Cyprus will be holding a campaign day for Sir Roger Gale on 4th April, as well as campaign days across North London and in other consistencies before the general election. During the dinner the musician Nikos Savvides entertained guests with his guitar, creating a welcoming atmosphere to the evening.
